Background of the Study

Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and its early detection plays a crucial role in improving treatment outcomes and survival rates. In Nigeria, where cancer cases are on the rise, early detection remains a significant challenge due to limited access to healthcare facilities, lack of awareness, and inadequate screening programs (Giwa et al., 2023). Nurses are key players in early cancer detection, particularly in rural areas where they often serve as the first point of contact for patients. They are involved in educating the public about cancer risk factors, performing basic screenings (such as breast self-exams and pap smears), and referring patients for further diagnostic testing.

In Kebbi State, where healthcare resources are limited, nurses' role in early cancer detection is critical in reducing the burden of cancer. However, the extent to which nurses are engaged in early cancer detection, the challenges they face, and the effectiveness of their interventions remain under-explored. This study aims to appraise the role of nurses in early cancer detection in Kebbi State, focusing on their knowledge, practices, and barriers to effective cancer screening.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role nurses can play in early cancer detection, cancer screening rates remain low in Kebbi State. Barriers such as limited training, inadequate screening resources, and low public awareness about the importance of early cancer detection contribute to this problem. Nurses' contributions to the early detection of cancer, including their knowledge of screening techniques and their ability to educate patients, are not well-documented. This study seeks to evaluate the role of nurses in early cancer detection and identify strategies for improving their involvement in cancer prevention efforts.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of nurses in early cancer detection in Kebbi State.

2. To evaluate the knowledge and practices of nurses regarding cancer screening and early detection.

3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in promoting early cancer detection and propose solutions to improve their involvement.

Research Questions

1. What roles do nurses play in early cancer detection in Kebbi State?

2. What is the level of knowledge and practice of nurses regarding cancer screening methods?

3. What challenges do nurses face in promoting early cancer detection?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in Kebbi State play a significant role in the early detection of cancer.

2. Lack of training, inadequate resources, and low public awareness hinder the effectiveness of nurses in early cancer detection.

3. Training programs and public awareness campaigns will improve the ability of nurses to promote early cancer detection in Kebbi State.

Definitions of Terms

• Early Cancer Detection: The identification of cancer in its early stages through screening, patient education, and awareness programs.

• Nurses' Role in Cancer Detection: The involvement of nurses in educating the public, conducting screenings, and referring patients for diagnostic tests for early cancer detection.
